Merchant's Cafe and Saloon

The oldest bar in Seattle… pretty cool. But boy is it old. A bit grungy and over priced drinks. But still very cool place to go!

I brought some friends to Seattle downtown to show them around. We stumbled across this bar on our way to an underground tour. We got Michael as our bartender and he kept us happy our whole stay very attentive and always making sure our glasses are full. If you ever need to go to stop or even stay for a while for a drink I recommend the merchant cafe. If Michael is working I recommend stopping here 20/10. Overall made my experience of the Seattle bars totally worth it.

It is Seattle's oldest bar, allegedly, but it's not just for interested tourists: it's a proper bar. I was a tourist, but as a Brit I like to be able to walk into a bar, sit down and order a. drink, without being told where to sit or having someone trying to upsell you food.

We got a discount because we took the underground tour. Nice place to drink and relax if it's not too crowded. Oldest restaurant in the city and said to be haunted.

Being that this is the oldest cafe in Seattle turne out to be a bar which did not disappoint. But the the Long Island iced teas however were $15 and the interesting part of this building was that there was a downstairs basement which actually was the 1st floor of the original Seattle floor built. So when you are walking into the bar you are actually walking into the 2nd floor. ALSO just so you know, restrooms are located downstairs there is a steep staircase and I was told the restrooms were unisex. There is another small bar downstairs.. it's dark and small but there is a room where they had xmas lights that gave off light. The waitress wasn't too friendly but maybe she had a hangover or a bad night. Over all it was a cool place to visit, atleast the locals think so when Seattle plays football.

Austin is the best bartender in pioneer square. Such a down to earth bartender and a great guy. Best service I’ve had in the neighborhood!

Oldest bar in Seattle. Plenty of seating. It's an unassuming bar. Extra loud games on television. Uninterested bar tenders have trouble making menu shots. Is it a sports bar?

Great place to visit in Pioneer Square. As the oldest restaurant in Seattle, the woodwork was beautiful along with the uniquely haunted downstairs area (minus the disco ball on the ceiling, I felt that took away from the ambiance). I loved the feel of the entire place! Staff was amazing and so friendly!

Stopped in on a quiet Tuesday evening after taking the underground tour. We were the only ones in the bar for quite a while. Bartender was very friendly and we had great conversation. Learned that the basement is apparently haunted if you're in to that kind of stuff. Tried Douglas beer which is apparently difficult to find...which is unfortunate because I loved it. Nice little old bar, but not much if you're looking for a social vibe.

Felt like stepping into a piece of history. Stopped in for a couple of drinks and had a lovely time, great atmosphere and the drinks on draught were all good.
