Merchant's Cafe and Saloon

We were looking forward to having a few beers here and soaking in the history after reading about this place. Unfortunately, the woman working there last night stayed hidden and refused to serve anyone, so we all left... six people in total... two couples and two individuals all came in separately, so it wasn't like a large crowd came in all at once and overwhelmed. There was one rather inebriated woman sitting at the bar, so she must have been served. So odd and so disappointing.

Diamond in the rough. Beautiful old time apartments updated with today's must have amenities. Real coffee you scoop. No little packets. Full kitchen set up. Eclectic layout with period decor. Soft, silky bedding. As many fluffy pillows as you need. Great view of the square. Surprisingly quiet. Personal service. Good food at the restaurant below. My new favorite place to stay in Seattle.

Easily my worst restaurant experience while visiting Seattle. The servers are too good to do their jobs and all the food appears to have come out of a can or box. I shared my experience on another review site and received threats for my thoughts from the business manager. How do places like this even stay open? Must be the historic appeal and convenient location right by the Underground Tour with lots of out of town patrons coming in.

My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out after our ghost tour. We went down to the basement bar where Michael the bartender was working to have drinks. His service was fabulous and his drinks were perfectly made! “Best bartender in Seattle!”

We found out about this place because we went on a ghost tour in Seattle around Halloween. This place has a lot of history and has been around for a long time, the oldest standing restaurant in Seattle. It was once a Liquor store/ cafe and hotel/ "apartments" as a saloon or I would consider a brothel and a card room. The men would choose which women he wanted by the photographs on the wall. There have been so many different owners due to the "ghostly happenings" so much that it was featured on two different shows. The Dead Files Episode Burned Alive" and I'm not sure on the other name, but I did see it. From what I remember the tour was better than the food. The service was decent, not too busy when we got there as we found a table right away. The food was not the best from what i remember. I know it's changed through the owners, but there were more options to choose from before. I've been here a couple times so it can't be that bad, it's a little different each time.

This place was very cool. They have a downstairs lounge area. I like the inside cause it makes me feel like I just walked into a different era. I like the fireplace area, so cozy. The bartender has like the most positive and best attitude ever. I love his creativity with his drinks.

Just went to the Seattle underground and took a chance at the oldest bar in Seattle and so glad that I did. Me and my wife meet Amanda and she is the best. She made are drinks perfectly and she is awesome to chat with.

Modest little pub, selection of food and drink is great. Underground bathroom with what looked to be more area to sit down or host events. Worth it for a little pit stop when exploring Seattle.

Delicious drinks, beautiful building and very cozy. Did not have food but my guess is that it's really good. Very friendly bartender.🍻🍹

Better enjoyed from the outside than from going in. I’d like to see the Merchant’s lean in to being the oldest bar in Seattle. Right now they are any nameless bar serving semi-passable and overpriced red basket food from a location that happens to be historic. It would be awesome if they tried to maintain this atmosphere by serving one or two interesting bar fare items that would have been traditional 100 years ago, but right now it’s not worth eating there or using a bathroom without soap and where 1/3 of the toilets are functioning. I also paid $8 for a small Caesar salad that was four pinched of Romaine. It feels like a tourist trap that doesn’t care about its patrons aside from getting them in the door. Not worth it, disappointing, overpriced, and would not recommend. Admire it from the outside only.
