Last night was the perfect time to come to River House on The Rock Island Bridge: a few clouds, 84 degrees, steady, gentle breeze. And what a view! No, we weren't on the fabulous Left Bank, but this is authentic KC: From our table, we had a wonderful view of the Kaw River, spectacularly comfy & cozy beneath wide open skies, with KCK's Strawberry Hill in the distance, the red brick tower of St. John the Baptist church clearly visible. We sat at a high-top, so a bit difficult for this old lady, but not impossible. Lots of bar seating available. And "inside" is relative here. Several tables/chairs ("low" seating if you don't want a high-top) just outside the restaurant entrance, but, technically, I'd say all seating is outside seating. (Will this place be open in cold weather?) This is not a totally enclosed space: the windows are fully open, no glass or screens, & mind the gap where floor & wall don't quite meet. Make sure to keep your bagged zipped shut. Dropping an open bag could lead to your lip balm, pen, or phone sleeping with the fishes. Our server was fast, friendly, efficient, checked back often to make sure we didn't need anything & to fill water glasses. I had the Bridge Burger: brisket blend, carmelized onions, American cheese, R.I.B. sauce on a potato bread bun & a cucumber salad side. My friends said their Crispy Shrimp dinners were plentiful & perfectly crisp as advertised, and their margaritas seemed to go down easy. They shared the Campfire S'mores Skillet & raved about the chocolate & marshmallow combo. It was plenty for 2 people to share. Great atmosphere of people talking & laughing, music not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. People of all ages just enjoying themselves. Loved seeing all the dogs! Water bowls left out for them. Also quite a few artists sketching & painting. Just googled and see it was an event: "About 40 artists are taking part in the Historic West Bottoms and Rock Island Bridge plein air event this week, setting up their canvases outdoors and capturing some of the city’s buildings and bridges in real time. - The Rock Island Bridge plein air event gives local artists a chance to take their work from the studio to the outdoors, with wind gusts expected around 25 miles per hour." Unisex bathroom, no problem, of course! Don't be an idiot. 🤪 And the stall doors run ceiling to floor, so no awkward gaps to expose you. Much appreciated smoking zone for my addicted friends. I will be back as often as possible!

This a great little getaway right in KC. Such a wonderfully unique experience. Everyone i met were very friendly... I am talking about the visitors. This place seems to bring out a very friendly and social vibe. The service was very friendly, helpful and attentive. Everything was kept clean. My only complaint was my food order. I ordered the loaded French Fries with pulled pork. It took over 35 minutes to get my meal. The kitchen didn't seem too busy at the time. The loaded fries were served in a box with a plastic lid. Once I got my food the fries tasted like they had been in that box for at least 10 minutes. Maybe they just missed placed my order and it sat there for a while. The fries were soggy and just not what I would have expected. I asked for the sweet sauce on the side and I got a small condiments container that was 1/3 "filled". Maybe they ran out of sauce too. I will definitely be back and update my review. Probably the food issue was just an early glitch that will be ironed out with more experience.

It was ok, the wait times were pretty excessive. Atmosphere was nice especially upstairs with the band. The food was decent & reasonably priced. Just be prepared to wait especially on the weekends (more crowded).

The River House in Kansas City is a really unique dining experience — the kind of place that feels like something different from the usual restaurant routine, and honestly, I think everyone should try it at least once. We ordered the whole smoked chicken with fries and a cucumber salad. The chicken was the clear winner: really good, with that smoky, comforting flavor that makes you understand why it’s the star. The sides were fine — the fries and cucumber salad were ok, but they didn’t quite match how strong the chicken was. Service-wise, everyone was very friendly, but it was also very slow, so it helps to go in with a patient, laid-back mindset. Overall, I’d give The River House 4 stars — worth it for the experience and the chicken, with a little room to improve on the pacing and sides.

Food and service was excellent. We loved the muscles. Our server was so attentive, kind and the red headed Mgr we met was so helpful. I would definitely go back.

I went there about a week after it opened. Service was fast. Burger with grilled onions had good taste. It was a bit overcooked, which was disappointing. Fries were good and beer was cold. My friends had the Cuban and smoked trout both good. Bread with trout was hard or something. They immediately got her new bread. The upstairs was closed for private party but I didn’t see anyone in there. I would go back. It’s a great atmosphere and service was fast especially since they just opened. The only thing I didn’t like - the bathrooms are all together unisex. There is a line of stalls. They were “sealed” from top to bottom so there was privacy. I tried family bathroom, locked. Maybe they have divided restrooms upstairs?

So much potential. The bridge is so awesome and the atmosphere is great, but they need to train their staff better. We went back and forth between the outside window and the inside hostess as to whether we could order from the restaurant menu to go, and I was told there were vegan options on the menu. We wound up just deciding to sit for lunch since no one seemed to know why we couldn’t order the lobster roll to go, and then there weren’t actually any vegan options outside of fries and steamed broccoli. Just a disappointing experience honestly.

We went to have a late lunch at the River House and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious and fresh. Once we ordered we had very fast food service. We came right at a shift change so it took a little longer to get our drink orders. Great service though, our waitress was great. There are a few unique things that one should know before coming. This is an open air establishment. It has a roof and some wall enclosures but not full windows. So it can get breezy. Another thing to note is they have unisex bathrooms. You go into a normal restroom but the stalls are fully enclosed. So if you're a lady you might be putting down some toilet seats and spending less time in the mirror fixing your make up, and if you're a guy you might have some feminine products in the trash. It is what it is. The last and possibly the most important thing is that the Google maps directions took me to the west side of the bridge... There is only an east side access. Overall, a great place to visit.
