Update Apr 2025 I've been back a few more times, and less impressed. Twice, the cashier has rung me up before I could tell them I had a discount. I tried their membership program, but kept getting too many emails, and special discounts never worked. I've also had some issues with dairy products going bad within a day or two. I'll still go here as there are some good employees and some items I can't find anywhere nearby. But, Rainbow isn't going to be a regular stop. I'll start with the only negative; this is not a discount supermarket. That said, they have great sales prices on some fantastic products. There are dairy and non-dairy items that are next to impossible to find in other stores. Rainbow has a extensive cheese department with knowledgeable employees. They have a large natural cosmetic and sundry department where you can find all sorts of natural products that are also environmentally aware. The store stocks healthier varieties of cookies, crackers, breads, and more. They also have perks including membership points and a discount for veterans, and senior 60+. Their staff in all departments are friendly and helpful. All in all, a great store for the the healthier, environmentally inclined citizens of SF.
The groceries here are fantastic, but what really puts Rainbow Grocery Coop in a category of its own is the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Workers here have regularly asked me if I needed anything and have been friendly and welcoming. I stopped to ask a question at the customer service desk, and was treated with so much kindness by a worker who offered to help me with bulk groceries, go with me through the checkout, bag my groceries and help me to my car while I was trying to handle grocery shopping with a hungry baby! This meant a lot to me as it's hard enough to navigate any grocery store with a little one, and I felt truly seen and cared for in a way that is rare. Thank you!
I always forget how unpleasant the neighborhood is and how impossible the parking is, like the worst Trader Joe’s in the world. Bulk items are about double the price at Winco (since this is San Francisco).
The money spent at coops generally circulates within the community scores more times than when spent at a corporate big box. It also is more health and environmental conscious than, say, wally is. I had a delicious lunch of microgreens and curry potato samposa, kombucha and blackberries, banana, plum. And yogurt, all organic. Delicious! And such friendly and skilled staff!
Best co-op grocer in SF and the whole state as far as im concerned
Great selection of good food at good prices. Enough awesome cheese variety to wow anyone.
As an amateur bread baker, Rainbow Grocery is indispensable. Large selection of different flour and grains and all in bulk, so you don't have to buy large amounts of rarely used ingredients.
For anyone who adores cooking and baking, Rainbow is a toy store. If you have friends visiting San Francisco, take them here. They can assemble a lunch to take with them on the plane - and beat the airport prices, too. Try the fresh spices - free aromatherapy. Your cooking and baking will go to a whole new level. You can make your own blends of tea at a fraction of the cost. If you rely on steel cut oats, buying them in bulk at Rainbow will save you a fortune. Same with powdered instant nonfat milk. Bakers will appreciate the bargain prices for the bulk flours.
My absolute FAVORITE grocery store!!! So many great health food options!!! AND they take EBT! If you use EBT you get 10% OFF your whole order! BONUS, you can make a rewards account and start earning points to us for more discounts. Make sure you bring your own bags!!! Sometimes the side entrance doors are closed depending on the time of day, so you’ll have to enter just through the front. More to brag on… here you can get RAW MILK! Save your bottles and return them here! I think it also counts towards a reward. They have the BEST eggs here too! Costco eggs fall short in comparison. Try out the sample cheese in their cheese section. I always like looking at their announcement board to see what events are happening or resources are available in the community. Ooh, and EXCELLENT vitamin / supplement selection! No longer using baby Tylenol once I learned there are better alternatives. 10 / 10 do recommend Rainbow Grocery.
This store offers only high-quality products, and I’m always impressed with the selection. The parking is convenient, with plenty of space, and it’s easily accessible. The staff is incredibly polite and helpful, making the shopping experience even better. Additionally, there’s a designated area to park bicycles, which is a nice touch. Highly recommended
