This place is run by very good people who help our community. About a month ago I bought a houseless person in Portland a couple big bags of dog food because it was apparent the dog was starving. The houseless person said the dog eats more than he does. Hunger is real in America and it is a serious issue.
I’ve been coming here for around a year, usually while I wait for my car at the mechanic across the street. It’s always nice & quiet (I come mid-morning on weekdays) and get some work done. The pastries are great and the coffee is fresh. Being volunteer run blows my mind.
This place is something special. They are truly giving and offering service to people who need extra help but still deserve to have good food made for them. I hope they are able to continue for as long as they want. Please check them out.

I found out about Heretic when they announced they were providing free coffee and breakfast to folks experiencing food scarcity after a government shutdown. I'm not ashamed to admit I went there for one of those breakfasts. I didn't know what to expect but my latte was very good and the breakfast burrito was quite tasty. This is a nonprofit venture, and the founder, Josh, has a heart of solid gold. Feel good about supporting a good cause, contributing to community care, AND enjoy great vittles and coffee at Heretic. (I'm particular about coffee—I wouldn't lie to you!)
Heretic is not only an amazing cafe, but a VITAL part to our community. Providing meals to those in need, a bathroom to those who may not have access to one, even providing a safe space to those who may be racially profiled by masked, armed, unidentified men who claim to keep us safe. If you haven’t heard about heretic by now, they are a pillar in our community. Let’s not forget they also help nationwide. Do your research, you’re gonna wanna be on this side of history. Thank you heretic, for simple being who you all are.
I love this shop. Kind staff, tasty and simple drinks, great aesthetics, lots of outlets. And they roast their own beans. AND they donate all profit after shop expenses to local nonprofits. So cool. Definitely will be going back
The most generous, community oriented, compassionate, and justice centered coffee shop in all of Portland. They consistently show up with love and care for those most targeted by oppression and violence and ensure that they go beyond serving wonderful coffee and actually offer mutual-aid and real tangible support to community members and local orgs and initiatives, whether that be through their SNAP breakfast, hosting fundraisers, or donating to orgs themselves, Heretic is a pillar in our community and we will protect it as such 🙏🏻
Went here for a little pop-up market, stayed for a cappuccino. Excellent and dry! Space was adorable and bright. Actually had drip coffee. Easy street parking.
