In considering what to write about our experience with Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz, a quote from Nelson Mandela came to mind: “A good head and a good heart is always a formidable combination.” When I first brought my elderly mother to Anatara, she had degenerative lung and heart conditions that I felt could benefit from a more holistic and integrative approach. Dr. Herskowitz’s experience in cardiology is what motivated me to bring my mother for visits from Fresno to San Francisco see him. We were not disappointed. After getting her extensive medical records from Kaiser and filling out a detailed medical history form, we met with Dr. Herskowitz for our first appointment for about two hours. He skillfully interviewed her, delving into her emotional history as well as discussing her medical issues. He then did a physical exam. From this he devised a plan of comprehensive care that included appointments with the naturopath and Chinese herbalist on the Anatara staff. What I can say is that instead of being on a downward trend with periodic trips to the hospital emergency room, her health stabilized and she has energy that gives her a good quality of life. For this, we are extremely grateful. I also had an unexpected medical crisis that Dr. Herskowitz guided me through. This is a very compassionate person who cares deeply about his patients. I believe it is the combination of his knowledge, experience, and insightful sensitivity with the commitment of the patient that can heal. I found the support staff to be quite helpful and kind, despite the high volume of patients their office sees. Dr. Herskowitz is genuinely concerned about the health of his patients and not interested at just making money (which they need to do to stay open). He did not "nickle and dime" us when we saw him in person or when we had telephone appointments.
