I signed an agreement with Ampact. I upheld my end of commitments however Ampact had put me under an Ampact abusive manager. I've tried over four to six weeks to find resolution but their Senior staff won't take phone calls or work toward resolution of their contract issue. It has caused me financial harm, despite being in conflict with the signed agreement. I would caution individuals that you can't necessarily trust Ampact for honoring their contract and financial agreements.

I’ve been part of this program since August for the 2024-2025 school year, and we’re now 3 months in. While things at the site are generally fine, teaching these kids has been a real challenge. Many of them either don’t want to learn, struggle with the capacity to focus, or let their behavior disrupt the classroom. I know they’re “just kids,” but if we don’t start instilling discipline and respect early on, it’s going to be a major issue for their futures. A lack of discipline now could very well be the downfall of this program—and it won’t help these children in the long run. Another thing that’s concerning is the pay. The program brags about the $1,000 stipend we get every two weeks, but in today’s economy, that just doesn’t stretch far. After taxes, it’s basically around $10 an hour. That’s hard to live on, and honestly, it’s disheartening. I had hoped to pick up a part-time job on the side, but that hasn’t been possible yet. The program manager, Lanaya Love, also hasn’t been helpful. She has a very condescending way of talking to people, often coming across as “nice-nasty,” which is not welcoming. She is a perfect example that not everybody deserves to be in leadership. The coaching staff and others seem more focused on numbers than on what’s actually happening in the classrooms. The curriculum we’re given is too vague to really help the kids who are already far behind, especially in reading. In DeKalb County, many of these students are several grade levels behind in reading. Math is important, sure, but reading is the foundation—and they need more support than what we’re currently providing. AmeriCorps/Ampact, you’ve got to do better. Tutors are working hard, but we need more resources, better support, and truly need you all to grasp a real understanding of the challenges we’re facing. The stipend and Segal Award aren’t enough to keep us afloat, let alone solve these larger issues. You should also consider requiring tutors to get certified in reading instruction so we can truly help these kids. Right now, I’m waiting for my food stamp application to be approved just to get by. We’re doing our best, but we need the program to step up too.
